Tell us about your love story!

“It all began a long, long time ago in the year 1998. A boy named Luke met a girl named Lindsay in their first year of high school. Over their years of schooling together they became very close friends, best friends. Then in October 2002 their friendship blossomed into love.

Over the last twelve years Luke and Lindsay have shared many adventures and made many happy memories in their life together. Then finally on the 28th December 2013, at their favourite holiday spot, Luke finally asked the question Lindsay had been longing to hear, “Marry me?”

Luke proposed to me while we were sitting on a wooden bench, watching the sun go down over-looking the back of Fraser Island, sea-breeze in our hair, eating ham & cheese croissants. To this day we frequently visit this spot to relax, reminisce and watch the sun go down.

Describe what marriage means to you.

A lifetime of friendship, laughter, sharing, encouragement, patience and unconditional love.

The wedding location.

We got married at Old Petrie Town on the Northside of Brisbane.

We had looked at a few venues but given that we only had 9 months to plan a lot of places were already booked for the dates we wanted. Old Petrie Town was 10 minutes from our home and we fell in love with the old world charm of the location. When we found out some of our dates were still available we booked right on the spot. It was perfect!

The theme of your wedding.

The theme of our wedding was centered on our long friendship, our love and “Our Love Story”. We’d been together for 12 years at that point and it really was a story, and this step was us creating the next chapter in that story. We wanted everyone we love to share in the beginning of that next chapter and witness the beginning of our Happily Ever After. We used a classic, romantic style that worked in perfectly with the old world charm of our venue at Historical Old Petrie Town.

The bride’s dress.

I’d been lusting after my dress online before Luke had ever proposed. So it came as no surprise to me that after trying on exactly 3 dresses, I put on the Mia Solano “Aubrey” and I knew that it was my dress. It was the first time I really felt like I was going to be a bride. The dress set the theme of our wedding, once I found the dress everything else fell into place. I topped it off with a crystal hemmed fingertip veil.

Luke isn’t one to cry on happy occasions, but the look on his face when he first saw me walking towards him was one of pure happiness. He said he remembers thinking how beautiful I looked and that as soon as he saw me all of his nerves subsided. I’ll never forget the huge smile he had on his face and it was hard take our eyes off each other.

Ceremony & reception.

Old Petrie Town had everything we needed. We held our ceremony under the 300 year old Fig Trees, we walked around the site and had our photographs taken in front of heritage listed buildings, an old fire and train stations and some beautiful blooming Jacaranda trees. Tom Petrie’s Restaurant set in a beautiful old Queenslander was on site for us to hold our reception. Old Petrie Town was the whole package and we were very lucky.

Wedding songs.

I walked down the aisle to “Turning Page” by Sleeping at Last and it was so beautiful, it fit perfectly with our theme and the lyrics were everything we felt about each other and more – it sounds so cliché I know, but I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful song to take those first steps toward my future husband.

We’d sifted through so many first dance songs we were confused. I remember one night Luke started singing to me, “Fill my heart with song, let me sing forever more. You are all I long for, all I worship and adore”. I couldn’t pick the song and he told me he’d found the perfect first dance song for our wedding, “Fly me to the Moon” – by Frank Sinatra. We choreographed our first dance but we forgot to take into consideration just how big my dress was, so in the end we just did what felt right, not taking our eyes off each other the whole time.

Food, food, food!

Tom Petrie restaurant catered for drinks and canapes on the deck before the reception and a roast dinner buffet for all of our 60 guests, apparently the food was amazing – we forgot to eat!

We wanted to make sure our guests were well fed so for dessert we organised, in addition to our wedding cake a cake and lolly buffet. People are still commenting on how great all the food was!

Most memorable moment.

A moment we’ll never forget was when we were pronounced Husband and Wife and we shared our first kiss, everyone started clapping and cheering and our dog, Buddy howled as everyone clapped – it was like he was cheering with everyone else.

What also made our ceremony that much more memorable and special was that Luke’s Uncle Russ married us, it was amazing having someone who had seen our relationship blossom, someone that really knew us officiate our marriage – it meant so much to us.

What about the extra details?

Our coordinator at Old Petrie Town was so accommodating in letting us include our two very special fur babies in our ceremony. Leo and Buddy were walked down the aisle by our ushers in little bow ties and they were also included in our photos. We couldn’t imagine our wedding day without these two present, so it was so wonderful that we got to include them.

What’s the best advice you can give a bride and groom planning their wedding?

Enjoy the process, organise it together and don’t let the little things get you down. Sometimes things won’t always go to plan, but in the end you’re marrying the person you love and that’s all that matters.
